PHP Classifieds Board Script

I install a PHP classifieds board script for clients as a separate engine in the domain root, not as a WordPress theme. After installation, the admin panel opens with categories, moderation queue, and VIP packages. Until the category tree is filled and at least a few real listings with photos exist, the feed looks broken even if the layout is perfect.

In practice, customers ask for "something like Avito for our city". They mean categories, city filter, a listing page with gallery and contacts, and an author cabinet. Parsing someone else's listings is another product and another legal risk; this article is about your own platform with your own rules.

What must work on launch day

The minimum scope I do not hand over without:

• A category tree of one or two levels; deep nesting at launch only hurts search.
• Submission wizard: title, text, price, city, 8 to 12 photos, and agreement to rules.
• Listing page with readable URL, date, views, and a "show phone" button, preferably after login to reduce spam.
• Moderation queue: a new listing is not visible until approved.
• Keyword search and filters by price, city, and category without empty 500 errors.

VIP and paid boosting are the second step. First the feed must fill and pass moderation; otherwise paid services turn into disputes.

Admin panel: what to click after installation

A typical path after the installer, with MySQL database created and config saved:

1. Log in as admin, open categories, and add Real Estate, Cars, Jobs, Services, and Personal Items. Split further only where content appears.
2. Create a city directory: at least the regional center and several nearby locations. City filtering is covered in city filter.
3. Enable pre-moderation for guests and new accounts. Trusted authors can sometimes use post-moderation, but not during the first week.
4. Create 8 to 15 demo listings with real-looking photos, not test1.jpg.
5. Check write permissions for upload, or galleries will fail silently. See photos in listings.

Moderation as a workflow

The moderator sees preview, city, category, IP, and account. Common rejection reasons: third-party watermarked photos, vague price without text, contact links in the title, and prohibited categories. Prepare short answer templates such as "add three product photos" or "remove the contact from the title" so moderators do not write essays.

After approval, the listing goes to the category feed and search. Author edits may send it back to moderation; this prevents replacing a harmless listing with spam after approval. More on queue and VIP: VIP and moderation.

VIP, boosting, and paid packages

A commercial classifieds board usually earns not from initial submission, which is often free, but from:

• VIP placement on the home page and at the top of a category for N days;
• one-time search boost;
• highlighting with color or frame in lists;
• a monthly package for real estate agencies or car dealers.

How a PHP script differs from a site builder

On a builder, you quickly get a nice home page and then hit limits: external subdomain, plugins, commissions, and poor white-label options. A PHP + MySQL script lives on your VDS or hosting, your domain and database belong to you, and moderation rules are yours. The downside is backups and PHP updates. The upside is that you can connect a Telegram channel with new lots (board bot) without waiting for a marketplace's permission.

Common mistakes on client domains

The same traps repeat:

1. There are 80 categories and 12 listings, so the user clicks into emptiness.
2. Contacts are open without captcha, so bots collect phones overnight.
3. There is no limit on active listings per account, so one person uploads 200 spam cards.
4. Category slugs collide with system paths, causing 404 in parts of the site.
5. Moderation was disabled "for speed", and a week later the platform is full of spam.

Before opening registration, I run the scenario in two browsers: author submits a listing, moderator approves it, another user searches by city and opens the phone. If this loop fails, advertising does not start.

Short checklist before advertising

• Home page shows fresh and VIP listings without broken images.
• Mobile listing submission reaches "sent to moderation".
• Author notification is configured, or the status is at least visible in the cabinet.
• Robots and sitemap expose categories and listing pages, not admin URLs.

A classifieds board is not a blog with categories. The system object is the listing: lifecycle, moderation, lifetime, and paid promotion. Until that lifecycle is closed in the admin panel, the PHP classifieds script is only a shell. Close it, and then invite the first sellers to your domain.

Listing lifetime and archive

On client domains, I enable automatic removal after 30 to 60 days with an email "extend or refresh". Otherwise the feed fills with lots that are no longer available. The archive remains in the author's cabinet so the listing can be raised again with the same text and photos, through moderation. Cron that expires listings and disables VIP must be documented; without it, the showcase cannot scale manually.
