Freelancer rating on your own website

Products 7 min read

A freelancer rating on your own website helps customers choose a contractor without an outside marketplace or screenshots of social media reviews. The score and profile showcase are built from your own deals: a completed order, a client rating, and sometimes service metrics such as on-time delivery. This is both feed UX and SEO: a profile page with reviews can bring traffic for years.

Do not confuse a marketplace rating with a company review service. There the object is a brand and the review platform's TrustScore. Here the object is a contractor inside a freelance marketplace. The signals are different, moderation is different, and an external website widget is usually unnecessary.

What a fair score should use

  • A rating after an accepted order, for example from 1 to 5.
  • The number of successful deals: not the only factor, but an important weight.
  • The share of orders delivered on time, if you track deadlines.
  • Dispute outcomes: frequent arbitration losses should affect the rating or badge.
  • Replies to reviews: a soft trust signal, not part of the score formula.

Fake "five stars for each other" activity is handled by one rule: a review is available only after payment or hold and the "order closed" status. Without a deal, no review can be posted. This is basic anti-fraud; without it, the top list is meaningless.

Where the rating appears

In a bid card, show it briefly: score and number of reviews. In the profile, show it in detail: review list, work samples, skills. In the contractor catalog, provide sorting by rating and a filter such as "from N reviews". Empty new profiles should not fill the first page by default; give them a separate "new" tab or sort by registration date.

SEO profile pages need a human-readable URL, name, specialization, bio text, and reviews. Thin profiles with no deals are better marked noindex until they have content, otherwise you get thousands of empty URLs.

Review after an order

The review window opens after work is accepted, preferably after the payout through escrow has passed. The client gives a rating and short text. The contractor can reply once, without endless editable comment wars.

Letting the client edit a review is debatable. If you allow it, keep the window short and mark it as edited. Deletion should go through complaint moderation for insults or personal data, not because the parties later argued.

Connection with orders and bids

A rating does not live separately from orders and bids. The clearer the deal statuses, the fewer fake "successes" you get. When choosing a contractor, the client sees the score next to the bid price. This is the main UI moment the rating exists for.

Marketplace context: freelance marketplace, comparison with major platforms: FL.ru alternative.

Formula: simplicity beats "AI scoring"

At launch, the arithmetic average of ratings plus a minimum-review threshold for appearing in "sort by rating" is enough. Leave complex weights such as "freshness x order value x sentiment" for later: they are impossible to explain when a user asks why they dropped in search results.

Badges such as "reliable", "has disputes", and "newcomer" are sometimes more useful than tenths of a point. A badge is assigned by rules; a score is a number. Do not mix everything into one unclear "karma".

Moderation and complaints

Insults, contacts used to move deals off-platform, and advertising in reviews go to the moderation queue. A hidden review must not participate in the average score. The hiding history is for admins, not for public arguments.

You can also calculate a simple client indicator: the percentage of accepted orders without disputes. Show it publicly or only to the contractor in the order card, as you prefer. It reduces bids on toxic briefs.

Rating acceptance checklist

  1. Close a test order with a hold and leave a rating: the profile score changed.
  2. Close a second order with a different rating: the average recalculated correctly.
  3. Hide a review in the admin panel: the average and list updated.
  4. A bid on a new order shows current numbers without a day-long cache.
  5. The profile opens by friendly URL, and reviews are visible without authorization if intended.

Rating cache is acceptable for minutes, not days. Otherwise, after a good deal a contractor spends a full day with an old zero score and writes to support.

Portfolio and skills near the rating

A score without work examples is weak. In the profile, add a grid of work with covers and short captions, and link skills to order categories. Then a bid with a 4.8 rating and relevant portfolio beats a five-star bid "about everything". Contractor search by skill is a separate showcase, not just star sorting.

Do not show a rating to hundredths when there are fewer than three reviews: it looks like false precision. Write "not enough reviews yet" and do not promote such profiles to the top by rating.

Reputation import and honest limits

Requests like "transfer my rating from another marketplace" should be rejected or handled with a badge such as "has external reviews", without bringing the number into your formula. You cannot verify someone else's stars. Your rating should grow only on your platform, otherwise you inherit someone else's manipulation.

Publish short rating rules: what affects it, what does not, and how to complain about a review. Transparency reduces tickets asking why someone is not first. Service badges can be recalculated quarterly, but do not silently change the average formula in the middle of a season; warn users in advance.

The link with a secure deal increases review weight: a rating after a real hold is more valuable than a rating posted for no reason. Implement the rating together with a working payment flow, not instead of it.

Contractor catalog as a showcase

A separate freelancer catalog with filters by skill, score, and hourly rate if the field exists works as an SEO showcase and as internal search for clients who do not want to wait for bids. A search card should show avatar, score, number of deals, short specialization tag, and a button such as "invite" or "create an order for this contractor" if you support that scenario.

Direct invitations do not replace the feed: part of the market still works through public orders. But for repeat clients, an invitation saves a day of collecting bids. The important part is that the rating in the showcase matches the rating in the bid, without cache discrepancies.

Once a month, clean out ghost profiles with no logins and no bids: they pollute search results and make the catalog feel empty.

Rule. Rating = closed deals + visible reviews + clear sorting. Without a link to an order, it is just a wall of text that can be gamed in one evening.
